All Dog Breeds >>Temprament of Otterhound

The Otterhound is a friendly, boisterous, even-tempered, and affectionate scent hound. He loves his family, but does not constantly demand their attention. He will be happy to see you come through the door, but he will then return to his corner to finish his nap. He has an excellent nose and will wander off on the trail of an intriguing smell, so he must be kept on a leash or in a fenced-in area at all times. He certainly has a mind of his own, but he is trainable. It just takes a skilled and patient trainer.

The Otterhound enjoys having a job to do and once he knows what it is, he is willing to work all day. He is good with other dogs and animals if raised with them. He is also good with children, but this is a large and clumsy dog, so he can easily accidentally flatten a wobbly toddler. He makes a good watchdog, and has a lovely, deep, baying bark that will probably annoy your neighbors. The Otterhound has a unique sense of humor and the heart of a joyful child.
