All Dog Breeds >>Health of English Toy Spaniel

The King Charles Spaniel may have health problems such as heart defects (mitral valve disease, or MVD, is endemic in this breed as well as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels), eye problems, patellar luxation (kneecap slipping) and fused toes, which can cause incorrectly grown toenails. They are also one of the breeds identified with an incidence of the potentially serious neurological condition syringomyelia and have a significant occurrence of hydrocephalus. They tend to live 10 to 12 years. The King Charles Spaniel and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel have similar health issues. See the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel health section for more information.
